1 Kinematics
Six particles are placed on the corners of a regular hexagon of side 4 m. Each starts from rest with a constant speed of 10 m/s such that direction of motion of each is always pointing towards the next in order. They finally converge. The distance covered by each particle before they converge is
1) 4 m 2) 8 m 3) 12 m 4) 16 m
SOLUTION
Velocity of approach vrel = v – v cos 60 °
= v / 2
Time of convergence = = 2a / v (a = side of hexagon) Now the distance covered by each particle = speed × time of convergence
v . 2a/2 = 2a = 2 × 4 = 8 m.
